You may know where your planner personality falls on the organizational scale, but what do you do with that information to help you understand organizing essentials?

We like to connect organization to planners and neat storage systems and the concept of everything being spic and span and in its place. But, while those things can reflect organization, they are not the definition of organization. Instead, organization is a state of health. It is an attitude of being ahead of the curve rather than constantly in a state of urgency. As such, it’s important to note that organization will look very different for each person.

In fact, every personality probably needs to make some tweaks in their organizational structure! For instance, a Type-A individual might need to learn to adopt a more relaxed system of organization that includes spontaneity and rest while the go-with-the-flow free spirit will need to learn some structure. But, there are some organizing essentials that work for every personality type.

Healthy Organization

Whether you need to back off from being a perfectionist or need to find a way to introduce a little more structure into your life, here are some organizing essentials to help you find a healthy organizational balance.

Organizing Essentials: A Chore System

Being healthy in organization does not mean you will have a spotless home. (In fact, I would argue that a spotless home might indicate a lack of health in relational and mental areas of life.) Instead, it means that you have a system for controlling your chaos. If the bathroom isn’t clean on Friday, it’s because you know that it’s regularly cleaned on Tuesdays. So, it’s okay today because you’re going to get there.

This why a good chore system is one of our organizing essentials. The simple act of having a system in place and keeping to it as regularly as possible can go a long way toward creating a peaceful, healthy home.

Organizing Essentials: A Calendar

The next in our list of organizing essentials is critical for keeping everyone in the family on the same page! Not everyone loves planning, and that’s okay. But, no family should be without a calendar of some sort.

Even if you think you can hold it all in your head or that you prefer to be spontaneous, it’s important to remember that you’re not the only person in the family. That’s not an accusation of self-centeredness but a reminder that everything runs more smoothly when the whole family is on board.

By having a calendar visible for the whole family to see and contribute to, you’re not responsible to keep it all in your head. Nor do conflicts arise because you aren’t aware of something that’s stuck in another family member’s head.

Organizing Essentials: Request for Help

It can be so difficult for those with an organized planner personality to understand how the rest of the family doesn’t see the chaos! It feels like they’re just being lazy. But, in truth, someone who is not inclined toward organization views the world very differently. They prioritize differently. And they don’t really understand the source of your frustration.

This is why asking for help is such an important part of our organizing essentials toolbox. Before your frustration boils over into anger, take a deep breath and speak up. A quick request of, “Hey, can everyone help me spend 15 minutes tidying the living room/dining room/kitchen area this afternoon?” goes a long way toward helping your less organized family members tangibly see how they can help you — without it ever turning into a fight!

Organizing Essentials: Regular Rest

It’s easy to think that rest is something you do when everything else gets done. Guess what? Everything else will never be done. You will never “deserve” rest. Rest is, instead, a choice to take care of yourself and your family physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. And yes, it’s an absolutely critical addition to our organizing essentials toolbox.

If you’re naturally highly organized, rest times remind you to stop, play, and prioritize relationships. If organization is not naturally important to you, established rest times help provide the motivation you and your family need to go ahead and get done the things that need to get done so you can play and rest together.

What are your organizational preferences? How does that fit with the rest of your planner personality? Take our Planner Personality Quiz to find out!

I love a great notebook/planner to keep me oragnized especially with homeschooling 4 children and keeping up with daily household tasks. In addition to that, the tips offered can be helpful. I will definitely be incorporating some of them in my daily routine. I love the idea of planning rest also.

Hey! I have 5 kids. 3 have been home schooled for a few years, 1 is starting his first year this year and 1 is just a baby atm. I’d like to start of by saying WOW this is an amazing product from the screen shots I’ve seen so far. Can I make a suggestion, as maybe an add on option? For split home families maybe a section to help navigate with the other parent. One of my kids father is super forgetful so it’s pointless talking to him about school at pickup, so have a section or even a column on the planner that allows us to mark off goals or curriculum they need to focus on would be super helpful. I would 100% pay extra for this feature

Really excited about the quiz (I LOVEEEE a good personality assessment!!!)! I’d classify myself as a hybrid homeschooler/unschooler and, while previously I would have assumed unschoolers typically fly by the seat of their pants (and, we do sometimes), for me personally, I’ve realized how important organization is—maybe even more so when we are leaning into unschooling.

    • Ann Hibbard July 25, 2022 Reply

So excited that you’re discovering this, Megan! You’re very much on the right track. In my experience with unschoolers, the most successful ones have been those who’ve made this very discovery about organization and record-keeping. Even if they don’t do a whole lot of planning, they recognize the need to keep certain resources on hand, have a framework that their education process fits into, and have a way to keep a record of what they’ve done. Makes all the difference!

I would have to agree. I did pre-k with my oldest last year. I wanted to call it kindergarten and get her reading strong but we weren’t stable enough. It was more like when I wanted to do it, we did it. We had a lot going on- moving, a new baby, a puppy…she was only 5…but I wanted to be on top of things and organized.

    • Ann Hibbard July 27, 2022 Reply

Fortunately, there is so much learning flexibility at that age, and just giving your daughter an introduction to reading concepts is definitely great progress. No shame there, my friend, especially with all of the “new” you had last year.

It’s easy to think you can wing it because you’ve been a multitasking mama for years right? It’s so much harder when the rollercoaster of life throws in those loop-d-loops! I love the idea of the chore task schedulers, I’ve done this for my kids, why haven’t I done it for me? I’m also really here to say that asking for help goes such a long way…for my family asking gives them the opportunity to help me because otherwise they just think “oh she’s got it and would rather it be done her way” and don’t offer to help so I get annoyed. What a crazy way to live and I’ve been doing it for years without even realizing it. None of us mean any harm but it’s amazing what a simple ask can do for the betterment of a family bond even!
