Resolutions are traditionally made at the beginning of each new year. But when it comes to eating healthier, breaking old habits, or losing weight, more than 92 percent of Americans fail at keeping resolutions. That is not a very motivating statistic. I would like to now go binge on pizza and chocolate cake! I digress.

Rethinking Resolutions

As I have thought about my own journey in life, I am typically one of the 92 percent. But this year, I am determined to make a change. Now, that doesn’t mean I quote or write the same resolutions. Rather, I am looking for a new method to implement in order to meet my goals for better living and stewardship for what God has entrusted to me.

The proclamation on January 1st, failure by January 5th routine seems way too overwhelming, especially if I’m going to start again three hundred plus days later. So this year, I am resolved to eat healthier, break my terrible sugar addiction habit, and lose a few pounds. I’m not going to determine success through a calendar of 365 days, but one day at a time. You see, my resolution is for today only.

To test my new method, I recently began implementing it. I began strong and focused. I grocery shopped to prepare myself for the hungry moments, bought all the supplements, and researched new recipes to make. How did I do? Well, I stayed on course for the first seventeen days, and I felt amazing.

Then I hit a bump in the road. It’s called life. It barreled towards me at 150 mph and resulted in fast food and sugar consumption and sporadic eating. This went on for four days before life settled back down.

What I found encouraging, though, is that I didn’t fall off the wagon completely. I had a few bad days, but that wasn’t the “be all, end all.” I started back on the healthier eating and am doing great!

So this year, this month, this week, or, shall we just say, tomorrow, start afresh with your resolutions and try to keep them for just the day. Remember what Scripture says:

“…do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” — Matthew 6:34 (ESV)
